How to Use the Decimal Place Value Chart
Read the Headings
Read the columns from thousands to thousandths and point out the decimal point between ones and tenths.
Line Up on the Point
Dictate 3.75 and have students write the digits so the 3 sits in the ones column beside the point.
Compare 0.5 and 0.50
Write both and ask what is the same. The 5 stays in the tenths place, and the extra zero adds no value.
Add the Zeros
Try 1,204.006 so students see why the empty tenths and hundredths places need zeros.
Round on Page 2
Have students write each decimal in words, in expanded form and rounded to the nearest tenth.
