Define a numeric scale with your own labels and thresholds. An A might be 90–100, a B might be 80–89, or you might use a 1–7 scale, or a 0–4 GPA scale. Whatever your system, set the labels and the ranges, and EMStudio applies them.

For grading that doesn't translate to numbers, use a select scale instead. Pass/fail, satisfactory/needs improvement, or any qualitative set of options you define. Choose whether the selected value affects the overall grade or sits outside the calculation.

Group assignments into categories and give each one a weight in the final grade. Tests at 50%, homework at 30%, participation at 20%, or whatever distribution your class uses. Weights apply automatically across every assignment in the category.

Each category can use a different type of grade. Tests can be scored numerically, homework can be marked complete or incomplete, participation can be qualitative. The gradebook handles the mix and rolls everything up into a single overall grade.

The grid for a single class shows every student down one side and every assignment across the top. Each cell holds the grade for that student on that assignment. Open a class and you can see exactly where each student stands without opening individual records.

Flag any grade entry as excused, missing, or late. The flag shows up directly in the grid so you can see at a glance which entries fall outside the usual pattern. Useful for tracking late work and explaining gaps in a student’s record — pair it with their attendance record for the full picture.

Excused entries are excluded from the student's average automatically. A student who missed an assessment for a school-sanctioned reason isn't penalized in their final grade, and the calculation reflects only the work they were expected to complete.

Each student logs in and sees the grades you've entered for them, organized by class and assignment. They can check their current overall grade, look back at past assignments, and see the feedback you've given without having to ask.
