Vocabulary Template Example

A 5th grader's water cycle words, each defined in their own words and used in a sentence.

Vocabulary sheet for a 5th grade water cycle unit: evaporation, condensation, precipitation and humidity, each with a definition in the student's own words and a sentence.

What's in the Vocabulary Template

Four Columns

Word, Definition in My Own Words, My Sentence and Picture, across the page.

Seven Rows

One row for each word, so a short unit list sits together on one sheet.

Unit or Topic Field

A field at the top that names the unit, beside Name and Date.

Word, Google Docs and PDF

Edit it in Word or Google Docs, or print the PDF. US Letter and A4.

How to Use the Vocabulary Template

  1. List the Words

Write the unit's words in the Word column, or have students copy them from the board.

  2. Talk About Each Word

Go over each word together, then ask students to say its meaning without reading the glossary.

  3. Define It

Students write what each word means in their own words, rather than copying the book.

  4. Use It in a Sentence

In My Sentence, students write a sentence that shows what the word means, not just where it goes.

  5. Draw a Picture

In the last column, students draw a picture that will help them remember the word.
