Mark attendance
In this article
Take attendance in seconds with a simple tap for each student. EMStudio tracks every entry by date and class, building a complete attendance record over your semester.
Open attendance
Click Attendance in the sidebar and select a class from the left panel. You can also filter the student list by status or tags using the filter buttons at the top.
Three grid views
The attendance grid has three views, toggled from the icons in the top right:
- Full month view — shows every day of the month in a wide grid. Students down the left, all calendar dates across the top. Good for seeing the big picture.
- Filtered month view — shows only the days this class is scheduled. Removes blank columns for days you don't teach, so the grid is more compact and easier to read.
- Day view — zooms into a single day. Shows all students with large status buttons, making it the fastest way to take attendance for today's class.
Use the day view for daily roll call. Use the filtered month view for reviewing patterns and catching up on missed entries.
Mark a student's status
Click any cell in the grid to cycle through the default statuses. You can also create custom statuses like Field Trip or Early Dismissal.
- ✅ Present — green check
- ❌ Absent — red X
- 🕐 Late — yellow clock
- 📋 Excused — blue badge
In the day view, you can also use the bulk status buttons at the top to mark all students as Present, Absent, Late, or Excused at once — then adjust individual students as needed.
Edit past attendance
Click any cell to change a past entry. Made a mistake last Tuesday? Just click the cell and update it. Changes save instantly. Need to record context? Add a status note to any entry.
Attendance is tied to your class schedule — each class slot on each day is an attendance entry. For a deeper look at one student's attendance history, open their student profile.
