What is a word problem generator?
A word problem generator writes story problems for you, so you never hunt for a sheet at the right level. This one covers addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, alone or mixed, in one-step and two-step stories. You set the range of numbers, and every number in a problem, answers included, stays inside it. Each problem has room to work and an answer line, and the key shows every answer. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.

When do you use word problems?
Whenever students should turn a story into a number sentence. Three moments where a fresh set of problems helps:

Practice after a new operation
When the class has just learned multiplication or division, print a page that uses only that operation, with times tables set to the facts you taught. Students apply the skill to a story instead of a bare equation.

Differentiated practice
Print one page with small numbers for students who need support and another with bigger numbers or two-step stories for those who are ready. Same kind of problem, different level, and each page comes with its own key.

Homework, review, and sub plans
Press New Problems for a different set at the same settings, so every day's homework is fresh. Leave a page and its key in the substitute folder, and whoever covers the room can check every answer.
Core features of
a word problem generator
A good word problem maker gives you a page of clear stories at the right level. Here is what this one does, from the operation you pick to the printed sheet.
Choose the operations
Pick Addition, Subtraction, Add & Subtract, Multiplication, Division, Multiply & Divide, or All Four. When you choose more than one, the operations take turns down the page, so a mixed set is not mostly one kind.
- Seven choices from one operation to all four
- Mixed sets share the page evenly
- Students' names are built into every story
Basic, All Types, or Two-Step
Basic stories ask for a total, what is left, or how many in each group. All Types adds missing start numbers, missing parts, and comparing. Two-Step stories take two steps, like adding and then subtracting.
- Basic: totals, what is left, equal groups
- All Types: missing parts and comparing
- Two-Step: two number sentences to solve
Set the numbers
For adding and subtracting, set a Numbers range from 0 to 1000. Every number, answers included, stays inside it. For multiplying and dividing, set a Times tables range. Answers are always whole numbers.
- Numbers range for adding and subtracting
- Times tables range for the other two
- Whole-number answers every time
An answer key for every page
Switch between the Worksheet and the Answer Key. The key writes each answer on the answer line with its unit, and prints the number sentences under the story. Press New Problems for a different set at the same settings.
- Each answer written with its unit
- Number sentences shown under each story
- New Problems gives a fresh set
Download the PDF or print it
The Worksheet and Answer Key download buttons give you two PDFs. Print sends the sheet to the printer. Set how many problems, pick a text size, choose US Letter or A4, and add your own title and directions.
- Two PDFs: the worksheet and the key
- 1 to 100 problems, with extra pages added
- Editable title, directions, and Name and Date row
How to make
word problems
Five steps from a blank page to a printed set, and none of them involve writing a story yourself.
Choose the operations
Open the Operations menu and pick one, like Multiplication, or a mix, like Add & Subtract. The Numbers or Times tables setting below it changes to match the operation.
Pick the problem type
Choose Basic, All Types, or Two-Step. A hint under the buttons says what each one covers. Then set the Numbers or Times tables range to match your students.
Add your students' names
Type names into the Student names box, separated by commas, or leave it empty for a mix of names. With fewer than three, the tool adds a few of its own.
Press New Problems if you want another
Press New Problems for a different set at the same settings. Switch to Answer Key to check every answer. Edit the title and directions, or leave the automatic ones.
Download or print
Choose US Letter or A4, then download the Worksheet for the student page and the Answer Key for yours. Or press Print to send the sheet to the printer.
That's the whole page
Set the operations and numbers once and print as many problem sets as you need. The generator is at the top of this page.

Get Started for FreeMore than a problem list
A premade sheet has one level and one set of names. This one writes the stories to your settings, works out every answer for you, and gives you the key. It runs in any browser, including a locked-down school laptop.
Two-step problems
Two-Step stories chain two operations, like multiplying and then subtracting. The key shows both number sentences, so you can see how a student should get there.
Small ranges widen themselves
If the range is too small to add within, the tool widens it and a warning gives the new top number. You always get a page, not an error.
Fill the Page in one click
A button under the page sets the problem count that fills the last page. Choose a small, medium, or large text size, and a large size gives each problem more room.
US Letter or A4
Pick the paper you print on and the page is laid out for it. The worksheet and the answer key are two separate PDFs.
Your settings are remembered
Your operations, ranges, and class names stay in this browser, so you can close the tab and pick up where you left off. Nothing is uploaded.
Free, and no watermark
No account, no sign-up, and no logo across the page. The only mark is a small "Made with EMStudio" line in the footer.
Who is the word problem generator for?
Anyone who needs story problems at a specific level without writing them by hand. If a premade sheet is always too easy or too hard, it is for you.

Classroom teachers
Warm-ups, homework, and review for your class. Type your class names, set the numbers to the unit you are teaching, print a copy for every student, and keep the key for yourself.

Tutors and homeschool parents
Make a page at your child's level and press New Problems for fresh practice each day. Print it at the kitchen table and use the key to check the work.

Special education teachers and aides
Start with Basic stories and a narrow range, then widen the numbers as confidence grows. Large text gives each problem a full line and plenty of room to work.
How EMStudio's word problem generator is different
Many problem makers hide the download behind a sign-up, put a logo on the page, or leave out the answers. This one is built by the team behind a full teacher planner, and it treats practice as part of your lesson.

Free, with nothing held back
The full PDF, the answer key, both paper sizes, and printing, all without an account or a daily limit. The only mark on the page is a small "Made with EMStudio" footer line.

Answers worked out, never guessed
Every answer is computed from the numbers in the story, and the key shows the number sentences too. You never have to solve the page yourself to be sure it is right.

Part of a full teacher planner
A page of problems is one small part of a lesson. When you are ready, EMStudio's lesson planner holds the rest: every class's lessons on a weekly calendar, beside your students, grades, and attendance.
