Number Line Generator
Pick a range and a step, and get printable number lines with blanks to fill in and an answer key, ready as a PDF in seconds. Free in your browser, no sign-up.
What is a number line generator?
A number line generator draws number lines for you. You choose where the line starts and ends and what it counts by, and it marks every number in between. You decide how many numbers are printed: all of them, about half with boxes left to fill in, only the ends, or none. It makes as many lines as you ask for, each with its own blanks, and draws an answer key with the missing numbers in red. Download the PDF or print it. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.

When do you use a number line?
Whenever students need to see how numbers sit in order and how far apart they are. Three moments where a custom number line beats a premade one:

Counting and skip counting
Count by 2s, 5s, or 10s, or by 0.25 for fractions and decimals. Choose the step, leave some numbers blank, and students fill in the gaps. The pattern shows up in the spacing as well as the numbers.

Addition and subtraction practice
Print a stack of lines from 0 to 20 and let students hop forward to add and back to subtract. Use Ends Only for a line to mark up, or No Numbers when they write every number themselves.

Negative numbers and temperature
Start the line below zero, say from -10 to 10, to show how negative numbers sit left of zero. Fill in the missing numbers together, then read a temperature or a debt on the same line.
Core features of
a number line generator
A good number line maker lets you set the range and the step and then gets out of the way. Here is what this one does, from the first number to the printed page.
Set the range and the step
Choose where the line starts and ends, from -1000 to 1000, and what it counts by: 0.1, 0.2, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, or 100. A hint under the range lists the marks, so you see the line before you print.
- Start and end from -1000 to 1000
- Count by 0.1 up to 100
- A hint lists the marks on the line
Choose which numbers are printed
All Shown prints every number. Some Blank leaves about half as boxes to fill in, in different places on every line. Ends Only prints the first and last number. No Numbers prints just the marks. A hint under the choice says what it does.
- All Shown, Some Blank, Ends Only, No Numbers
- Boxes under the numbers to fill in
- Different blanks on every line
Make a whole sheet of lines
Set how many lines you want, from 1 to 100. The footer shows the line and page count, and Fill the Page adds just enough lines to finish the last page. Turn on Problem numbers, and pick small, medium, or large text.
- 1 to 100 number lines
- Fill the Page finishes the last sheet
- Small, medium, or large text
An answer key for every sheet
Switch between the Worksheet and the Answer Key. The key prints every missing number in red, right where the box is. Press New Problems for fresh blanks on the same range and step.
- Missing numbers printed in red
- New Problems moves the blanks
- Same range and step, new sheet
Download the PDF or print it
The Worksheet and Answer Key download buttons give you two PDFs. Print sends the sheet to the printer. Choose US Letter or A4, edit the title and directions, and switch the Name and Date row off if you want.
- Two PDFs: the worksheet and the key
- US Letter or A4 paper
- Editable title, directions, and Name and Date row
How to make
a number line
Five steps from a blank page to a stack of number lines, and most of the time is choosing the range.
Set the range
Use the Numbers from steppers to choose where the line starts and ends. Negative numbers are fine. The hint under them lists the marks, such as 11 marks: 0, 1, 2 … 10.
Choose what to count by
Open Count by and pick a step, from 0.1 to 100. Counting by 5s from 0 to 50 gives 11 marks. If the range makes more marks than fit on one line, the hint asks you to count by a bigger number.
Pick which numbers show
Under Numbers on the line, choose All Shown, Some Blank, Ends Only, or No Numbers. The title and directions change to match until you type your own. Switch off the Name and Date row if you do not need it.
Press New Problems if you want another
Press New Problems for fresh blanks on the same range and step. Switch to Answer Key to see the missing numbers in red. Set How many for the number of lines on the sheet.
Download or print
Choose US Letter or A4, then download the Worksheet for the student page and the Answer Key for yours. Or press Print to send the sheet to the printer.
That's the whole sheet
Set the range once and print as many sheets as you need. The generator is at the top of this page.

Get Started for FreeMore than a blank line
A premade number line has someone else's range. This one draws the line you ask for, spaces the marks evenly, and gives you the key. It runs in any browser, including a locked-down school laptop.
Negative numbers, with a minus sign
Start the line below zero and the negatives are printed with a minus sign, so students see zero in the middle and the numbers on both sides.
Whole numbers or decimals
Count by 0.1, 0.2, 0.25, or 0.5 and the marks print as decimals, such as 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1. Counting by whole numbers prints whole numbers.
A warning when the line is too crowded
A line holds up to 201 marks. Ask for more and the hint says how many you asked for and to count by a bigger number.
A title and directions that match
The title and the directions update with your range, step, and numbers choice. Edit either one, and switch the Name and Date row off in one click.
US Letter or A4
Pick the paper you print on and the page is laid out for it. The worksheet and the answer key are two separate PDFs.
Free, and no watermark
No account, no sign-up, and no logo across the page. Your settings stay in this browser, and the only mark is a small "Made with EMStudio" footer line.
Who is the number line generator for?
Anyone who needs number lines with a specific range or step. If a premade sheet never quite matches the numbers you are teaching, it is for you.

Classroom teachers
Skip counting in first grade, fractions and decimals in fourth, negative numbers in sixth. Set the range for your class, print a copy for every student, and keep the answer key for yourself.

Tutors and homeschool parents
Make a sheet for the exact skill a child is working on and print it at the kitchen table. Show every number for a beginner, and leave more blanks as they get steady.

Intervention and special education teachers
Build small steps for a learner who needs them: a short range, one step size, and more numbers shown. Print a fresh sheet each day with the blanks in new places.
How EMStudio's number line generator is different
Many number line makers bury the download behind a sign-up, add a logo to the page, or give you no answer key. This one is built by the team behind a full teacher planner, and it treats a worksheet as part of your lesson.

Free, with nothing held back
The full PDF, the answer key, both paper sizes, and printing, all without an account or a daily limit. The only mark on the page is a small "Made with EMStudio" footer line.

An answer key every time
Every sheet comes with its own key, with each missing number in red. You never have to fill in the page yourself to be sure it is right.

Part of a full teacher planner
A worksheet is one small part of a lesson. When you are ready, EMStudio's lesson planner holds the rest: every class's lessons on a weekly calendar, beside your students, grades, and attendance.
