What is a spelling test maker?
A spelling test maker, also called a spelling test generator, turns a list of words into a test sheet with a numbered writing line for each word. You read the words aloud and students write them down. This one takes up to 50 words, numbers them, and draws the lines. It makes an answer key with every word written on its line, and a Practice sheet where each word is printed with three lines to copy it. Add a title, then download the PDF.

When do you use a spelling test?
Whenever you want to see how well students can spell the words you taught. Three moments where a test built from your own list beats a premade one:

The Friday spelling test
Paste this week's list and print a numbered sheet in a minute. Read the words aloud, students write each one on its line, and you check the papers against the answer key. Next Monday, type the new list and print again.

Practice before the test
Switch to the Practice sheet and each word is printed with three lines beside it. Students copy the word three times during the week, so the spelling has been written out before test day arrives.

Quick checks and retakes
Pull the five words a few students missed and make a short test just for them. Choose Mixed Up for the word order, so a retake does not follow the list students already know by heart.
Core features of
a spelling test maker
A good spelling test maker takes your list and gets a clean sheet out the other end. Here is what this one does, from the first word to the printed page.
Type or paste your words
Put one word on each line, up to 50. Paste this week's list from a document or an email. A note under the box says how many words you have, and tells you if the sheet uses only the first 50.
- One word per line, up to 50 words
- Paste a list from a document
- A count of your words under the box
A numbered line for every word
The test sheet numbers each word and gives it a writing line, so students can number their answers as you read. Choose one column or two. Numbers run down the page, 1, 2, 3, not across.
- Numbered lines to write on
- One column or two
- A short list fits on a single page
Plain or guided lines
Plain lines work for most classes. Guided lines add a top line and a dashed middle line, the way early writers learn their letters. Pick a text size, and use Mixed Up to print the words in a different order from your list.
- Plain or Guided writing lines
- Small, medium, or large text
- Words As Typed or Mixed Up
An answer key for every test
Switch between the Worksheet and the Answer Key. The key writes every word on its numbered line in red, so you can mark a stack of papers quickly. It always matches the sheet you see.
- Each word written on its line
- Printed in red, apart from the test
- Key always matches the sheet you see
Download the PDF or print it
The Worksheet and Answer Key download buttons give you two PDFs. Print sends the sheet to the printer. Choose US Letter or A4, and switch the Name and Date row off if you want.
- Two PDFs: the test and the key
- US Letter or A4 paper
- Name and Date row you can switch off
How to make
a spelling test
Five steps from a blank page to a stack of tests, and typing the words is the longest part.
Type your words
Put one word on each line, up to 50, or paste a list from a document. The note under the box shows how many words you have, and you can replace the example words at any time.
Pick Test or Practice
Test gives each word a numbered line to write on. Practice prints each word with three lines to copy it. Then choose plain or guided lines, and one column or two for a test.
Add a title and directions
The title reads "Spelling Test" until you type your own. The directions tell students to listen to each word and write it on the line. Change either one, or switch the Name and Date row off.
Check the sheet and the key
Look over the Worksheet tab, then switch to Answer Key to see every word written on its line. Pick Mixed Up if you want the words in a different order from your list.
Download or print
Choose US Letter or A4, then download the Worksheet for your students and the Answer Key for yourself. Or press Print to send the sheet to the printer.
That's the whole test
Type the words once and print as many tests as you need. The maker is at the top of this page.

Get Started for FreeMore than a spelling test template
A premade test uses someone else's words. This one uses yours, numbers the lines, and gives you the key. It runs in any browser, including a locked-down school laptop.
Guided lines for early writers
Switch to Guided lines for a top line and a dashed middle line under every word. Young writers see where each letter starts and stops.
Practice sheet included
Each word is printed with three writing lines beside it, so students copy the spelling before the test. It uses the same list you typed.
Mixed Up word order
Print the words in a different order from your list. Use it for a retake, or to keep students from learning the order instead of the spelling.
US Letter or A4
Pick the paper you print on and the page is laid out for it. The worksheet and the answer key are two separate PDFs.
Your settings are remembered
Your words and settings stay in this browser, so you can close the tab and pick the same test up later. Nothing is uploaded.
Free, and no watermark
No account, no sign-up, and no logo across the page. The only mark is a small "Made with EMStudio" line in the footer.
Who is the spelling test maker for?
Anyone who gives spelling tests built around a specific list of words. If a premade sheet never matches what you taught this week, it is for you.

Classroom teachers
Weekly lists, unit vocabulary, and sight words. Type the words for your class, print a copy for every student, and keep the answer key to mark the papers.

Tutors and homeschool parents
Make a test from this week's lesson and print it at the kitchen table. Use the Practice sheet during the week and the test on the last day, with the same list.

ESL and language teachers
Build a test from the new words in a lesson. Guided lines help learners who are still forming their letters, and the answer key lets you check the sheets quickly.
How EMStudio's spelling test maker is different
Many spelling test makers bury the download behind a sign-up, add a logo to the page, or give you no answer key. This one is built by the team behind a full teacher planner, and it treats a test as part of your lesson.

Free, with nothing held back
The full PDF, the answer key, both paper sizes, and printing, all without an account or a daily limit. The only mark on the page is a small "Made with EMStudio" footer line.

An answer key every time
Every test comes with its own key, with each word written on its numbered line. You never have to count lines or check your list to mark a paper.

Part of a full teacher planner
A test is one small part of a week. When you are ready, EMStudio's lesson planner holds the rest: every class's lessons on a weekly calendar, beside your students, grades, and attendance.
