What is a multiple choice test maker?

A multiple choice test maker turns typed questions into a finished test. You write each question with its choices and put an asterisk before the right one. The tool numbers the questions, letters the choices, and lays the test out on the page. It also makes an answer key with every right choice circled in red. Some teachers call it a multiple choice quiz maker; the sheet is the same. Download the PDF and hand it out. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.

When do you use a multiple choice test?

Whenever you want a quick, fair check of what students know. Three moments where a test built from your own questions beats a premade one:

A teacher at a desk typing test questions into a laptop while a printed test and a red pen sit beside the keyboard

End-of-unit tests

Write the questions from what you actually taught, with the right choice marked as you type. Print a numbered test, keep the answer key beside you, and mark a stack of papers in minutes instead of an evening.

Students sitting in rows at their desks, each working on a printed test while a teacher walks between the rows

Tests that students cannot copy

Choose Mixed Up and two to four versions, and each version comes out in its own order, tagged Version A, Version B, and so on. Neighbors cannot read each other's answers, and every version has its own key.

Review before the big test

Make a short practice test on the topics that need another look, and use the bubble answer sheet to give students a feel for test day. Press Mix Up Again for a fresh order next week.

Core features of
a multiple choice test maker

A good multiple choice test maker takes your questions and gets a clean test out the other end. Here is what this one does, from the first question to the printed page.

Type your questions and choices

Type each question, then its choices on the lines under it, with an asterisk before the right one. A blank line starts the next question. A note under the box counts your questions and names any with no right answer.

  • An asterisk marks the right choice
  • A blank line starts a new question
  • Up to 12 choices and 200 questions
Type a question, then choices

More than one kind of question

Mix four kinds of question on one test. Choices get letters, True and False get circles, a word in square brackets becomes a blank, and a question with no choices gets lines to write on.

  • Lettered choices on each question
  • True or False with two circles
  • Blanks and written answers too
Four kinds of question

Mixed-up order and versions

Choose Mixed Up to shuffle the question order and the choices. Pick one to four versions: Version A can stay as typed, and the rest are shuffled differently. Choices like All of the above stay put.

  • Order: As Typed or Mixed Up
  • One to four tagged versions
  • All of the above keeps its place
Up to four versions

An answer key for every version

Switch between the Worksheet and the Answer Key. The key circles the right letter in red, fills the right True or False circle, and writes blank and written answers in red. Every version gets its own key.

  • Right letter circled in red
  • True or False circle filled in
  • Written answers printed in red

A bubble sheet, a PDF, or print

Turn on the Answer sheet for a bubble page after the test, with a row of circles for each choice and True or False question. Download the Worksheet and Answer Key as PDFs, or press Print.

  • An optional bubble answer sheet
  • Two PDFs: the test and the key
  • US Letter or A4 paper

How to make
a multiple choice test

Five steps from a blank page to a stack of tests, and writing good questions is the longest part.

Type your questions

Type each question with its choices on the lines below it, and put an asterisk before the right choice. Leave a blank line between questions. The note under the box shows the count by kind.

Star the right choice

Set the order and versions

Under Order, pick As Typed or Mixed Up. Under Versions, pick one to four. The hint under them says what will be shuffled, so you know before you print.

Pick order and versions

Add an answer sheet if you want one

Switch Answer sheet to On for a page of bubbles after the test. It covers the choice and True or False questions. Set Answer lines from one to four for written questions.

Answer sheet on

Press Mix Up Again, then check the key

Mix Up Again shows once the order is Mixed Up or you have more than one version. It shuffles the same questions into a new order. Switch to Answer Key to check every right answer.

Mix Up Again, new order

Download or print

Choose US Letter or A4, then download the Worksheet for students and the Answer Key for you. Or press Print to send the test to the printer. Edit the title and directions first if you like.

More than a test template

A premade test asks someone else's questions. This one builds the page from yours, shuffles it when you ask, and gives you the key. It runs in any browser, including a locked-down school laptop.

All of the above stays in place

When a question has a choice like All of the above, its choices keep the order you typed, even on a shuffled test.

All of the above stays put

A missing answer is named

If a question has no right answer marked, the hint counts them and tells you to put an asterisk before the right choice.

A header ready to print

The title reads Multiple Choice Test and the directions fit the kinds of question you typed. Edit either one, or switch off the Name and Date row.

Who is the multiple choice test maker for?

Anyone who needs a test built around specific questions. If a premade test never quite matches what you taught, it is for you.

A teacher handing out printed tests to a row of students at their desks

Classroom teachers

Unit tests, chapter checks, and exit tickets. Write the questions in your students' language, print a copy for every student, and keep the answer key for yourself.

A parent and a child at a kitchen table with a laptop and a printed test being filled in with a pencil

Tutors and homeschool parents

Make a test for this week's lesson and print it at the kitchen table. Turn on the answer sheet for a child who is practicing bubble tests, or leave it off for everyday checks.

A teacher at a small table giving a short printed test to two students

Teachers who give make-ups and retakes

Pull the questions a few students missed and print a short retake in a new order. Versions B to D are always shuffled, so a retake does not match the test the class already saw.

How EMStudio's multiple choice test maker is different

Many test makers bury the download behind a sign-up, add a logo to the page, or give you no answer key. This one is built by the team behind a full teacher planner, and it treats a test as part of your lesson.

Free, with nothing held back

The full PDF, the answer key, every version, both paper sizes, and printing, all without an account or a daily limit. The only mark on the page is a small "Made with EMStudio" footer line.

Your questions, not a stock bank

You write every question, so the test checks what you taught, at the reading level of your class. The tool does the numbering, the lettering, the shuffling, and the layout.

Part of a full teacher planner

A test is one small part of a unit. When you are ready, EMStudio's lesson planner holds the rest: every class's lessons on a weekly calendar, beside your students, grades, and attendance.
