What is an addition worksheet generator?

An addition worksheet generator builds a sheet of addition problems for you, so you never write them by hand. This addition worksheet maker adds two or three numbers per problem, picks each number at random from the digit size or range you choose, and sets the problems out in neat rows. You decide whether the sums carry. It draws an answer key in red too. Set the numbers, download the PDF, and print it. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.

When do you use an addition worksheet?

Whenever students need more practice with sums at exactly their level. Three moments where a fresh sheet beats a premade one:

A teacher at a desk setting up an addition sheet on a laptop with a stack of printed warm-up worksheets beside it

Daily warm-ups and review

Print a new sheet each morning for the first five minutes of class. Every sheet has different numbers, so students practice the skill instead of copying yesterday's answers, and the key lets you check the stack fast.

Teaching carrying step by step

Start with sums that never carry, such as 42 + 35, then move to sums that always carry, such as 47 + 25. When students are ready, mix the two. Each stage gets its own sheet with its own key.

Homework and intervention

Set the digits to the size your class is working on and send home a sheet that matches. For a student who is behind, drop to one digit and print fewer, larger problems. The key lets a parent check it in a minute.

Core features of
an addition worksheet generator

A good worksheet tool lets you set the size of the numbers, then gives you a clean sheet. Here is what this one does, from the first setting to the printed page.

Choose digits for each number

Pick two or three numbers per problem. Each number has its own menu with 1 to 5 digits, so a sheet can add a two-digit number to a one-digit number. The title on the sheet changes to match your choice.

  • Two or three numbers per problem
  • One to five digits for each number
  • Title updates as you choose
One to five digits each

Set a custom number range

Choose Custom range on any number and type the lowest and highest value, up to 9,999,999. Use it for sums within 20, hundreds only, or any set of numbers your standards call for.

  • Type a lowest and highest value
  • A separate range for each number
  • Values up to 9,999,999
Or type your own range

Control carrying

The Carrying setting has three choices: Mixed, None, and Always. A hint under it shows an example, such as 42 + 35 for no carrying. Choose None to teach the basics, Always to drill regrouping.

  • None, Always, or a mix of both
  • A hint with a sample problem
  • A note if the numbers can't comply
Carrying: mixed, none, always

An answer key for every sheet

Switch between the Worksheet and the Answer Key. The key shows the same sums with every answer written in red. Press New Problems for a different set with the same settings.

  • Every answer in red
  • New Problems gives fresh numbers
  • The key always matches the sheet

Download the PDF or print it

The Worksheet and Answer Key download buttons give you two PDFs. Print sends the sheet to the printer. Choose US Letter or A4, set 1 to 100 problems, and pick vertical or horizontal.

How to make
an addition worksheet

Five steps from a blank page to a stack of sheets, and most of the time goes to choosing the numbers.

Two or three numbers

Choose the digits

Open the menu for each number and pick 1 to 5 digits, or choose Custom range to type a lowest and highest value. Use a mix to add a big number to a small one.

Choose the digits

Set the carrying

Choose Mixed, None, or Always under Carrying. The hint shows a sample problem. Then set How many, the format, and the problems per row. The directions read "Find each sum." until you edit them.

Set the carrying

Press New Problems for another

Press New Problems for different numbers with the same settings. Switch to Answer Key to check the red answers. Do it as often as you like.

More than a worksheet template

A premade sheet has fixed numbers and one answer key. This one builds new sums from your settings, controls carrying, and gives you the key. It runs in any browser, including a locked-down school laptop.

Three numbers per problem

Switch from two numbers to three for column addition with a longer stack. Each number keeps its own digit setting.

Three numbers per problem

Sums that carry, or never do

Pick None or Always and every problem follows the rule. If the numbers can't allow it, a note tells you how many problems break it.

Sums that never carry

A title, directions, and Name and Date

The title follows your settings, such as "2-Digit Addition". Edit it and the directions on the page. The Name and Date row switches off in one click.

Pick the paper you print on and the page is laid out for it. The worksheet and the answer key are two separate PDFs.

Who is the addition worksheet generator for?

Anyone who needs addition practice at the right level and does not want to write the problems. If a premade sheet never matches what your students are on, it is for you.

Classroom teachers

Warm-ups, homework, and review for any grade. Set the digits for your class, print a copy for every student, and keep the answer key for yourself.

Tutors and homeschool parents

Make a sheet for the exact skill a child is working on and print it at the kitchen table. Use single digits for a beginner and larger numbers for an older child.

Special education and intervention teachers

Keep to one digit, choose no carrying, use a large text size, and print only a few problems per row. Build the sheet around what a student still needs.

How EMStudio's addition worksheet generator is different

Many worksheet generators bury the download behind a sign-up, add a logo to the page, or give you no answer key. This one is built by the team behind a full teacher planner, and it treats a worksheet as part of your lesson.

Free, with nothing held back

An answer key every time

Every sheet comes with its own key, with each answer in red. You never have to add the problems yourself to be sure the page is right.

A worksheet is one small part of a lesson. When you are ready, EMStudio's lesson planner holds the rest: every class's lessons on a weekly calendar, beside your students, grades, and attendance.
