What is a tracing worksheet generator?
A tracing worksheet generator makes the practice page where a child traces over dotted or faded letters, numbers, and shapes. This one lays each row on guide lines, with a solid model first and copies to trace along the rest of the row. Choose capitals, lowercase letters, letter pairs, numbers, shapes, or pre-writing lines, or type your own. Green starting dots show where each stroke begins. Download the PDF or print it, with no sign-up.

When do you use a tracing worksheet?
Whenever young hands are learning where a stroke starts and which way it goes. Three moments where a page you set up yourself beats a stack of fixed sheets:

Learning letters and numbers
Print capitals, lowercase letters, or numbers from 0 to 20, one row for each. The first copy is solid so students see the model, and the dotted copies after it let them follow the shape with a pencil, starting at the green dot.

Warming up before writing
Hand out shapes or pre-writing lines first. Straight, slanted, zigzag, wavy, and looped lines build the pencil control that letters need later, and circles, squares, triangles, and hearts give a gentle start for the youngest students.

Practice for the letters a child needs
Type exactly what to trace, one row at a time, such as the letters in a name, a few numbers, or this week's short words. Each row is copied along the line, so a child who needs more practice gets more.
Core features of
a tracing worksheet generator
A good tracing worksheet maker lets you choose what to trace and how it looks, then gives you a clean page. Here is what this one does, from the first choice to the printed sheet.
Pick what to trace
The Trace menu offers Capital Letters, Lowercase Letters, Letter Pairs (Aa), Numbers 0–20, Shapes, Pre-Writing Lines, and My Own. Each set gets a row for every item, and a hint under the menu says exactly what the page will hold.
- Seven sets in one menu
- A row for each letter or number
- A hint says what the page holds
Type your own rows
Choose My Own and type letters, numbers, or short words, one per row, up to 80 rows. A short row is copied along the line to trace. Anything the alphabet cannot draw is left out, and a hint names it.
- One letter, number, or word per row
- Short rows are copied along the line
- A hint names anything left out
Dots or faded, with start dots
Set Tracing to Dots for dotted copies or Faded for light gray ones. The first copy in each row is solid as the model. Starting dots On adds a green dot where each stroke begins, and the directions mention it.
- Dots or Faded copies
- A solid model first in each row
- Green starting dots On or Off
Three line sizes and repeat rows
Choose a Size for ½ inch, ¾ inch, or 1 inch lines, bigger for small hands. Rows each repeats every letter, number, or shape one, two, or three times, so a page gives as much practice as you want.
- ½, ¾, or 1 inch lines
- Rows each: 1, 2, or 3
- More pages when there are more rows
Download the PDF or print it
The Worksheet download button gives you a PDF of every page. Print sends the pages to the printer. Choose US Letter or A4, edit the title and directions, and switch the Name and Date row off if you want.
- One PDF of every page
- US Letter or A4 paper
- Editable title, directions, and Name and Date row
How to make
a tracing worksheet
Five steps from a blank page to a stack of tracing sheets, and choosing what to trace is the longest part.
Choose what to trace
Open the Trace menu and pick capitals, lowercase letters, letter pairs, numbers, shapes, or pre-writing lines. Choose My Own to type your own rows, one per line.
Set the look of the tracing
Choose Dots or Faded for the copies, switch the green starting dots On or Off, and set Rows each to 1, 2, or 3. A bigger size gives small hands more room.
Add a title and directions
The title names the set, such as Capital Letter Tracing, until you type your own. The directions say to trace each letter and to start at the green dots. Switch off the Name and Date row if you do not need it.
Check the preview
The page redraws as you change a setting. Look at the solid model and the copies on each row, and flip through the pages if the set runs to more than one.
Download or print
Choose US Letter or A4, then download the Worksheet as a PDF. Or press Print to send the pages to the printer. There is no answer key, because the student does the tracing.
That's the whole page
Pick a set once and print tracing pages for the whole class. The generator is at the top of this page.

Get Started for FreeMore than a fixed set of sheets
A downloaded pack gives you one page per letter at one size. This one builds the set you choose, at the size and dot style you choose, and it runs in any browser, including a locked-down school laptop.
Shapes and pre-writing lines
Circles, squares, triangles, stars, hearts, and more, plus straight, slanted, zigzag, wavy, and looped lines to trace before any letters.
Solid model, then dotted copies
Each row starts with a solid copy to look at, then dotted or faded copies spread along the line for the student to trace.
Directions and a Name and Date row
Every page carries a title and a line of directions, plus a Name and Date row that is on by default and switches off in one click.
US Letter or A4
Pick the paper you print on and every page is laid out for it. The download is one PDF with all the pages of the set.
Your settings are remembered
Your set, rows, and settings stay in this browser, so you can close the tab and pick up the same page later. Nothing is uploaded.
Free, and no watermark
No account, no sign-up, and no logo across the page. The only mark is a small "Made with EMStudio" line in the footer.
Who is the tracing worksheet generator for?
Anyone who sits beside a child who is learning to form letters, numbers, and shapes. If fixed worksheets never match what you are teaching, it is for you.

Classroom teachers
Print the set you are teaching this week, in the size and style your class needs. Hand out letters, numbers, or shapes, and keep the same layout all year.

Tutors and homeschool parents
Type the letters your child finds hardest, or the numbers for today, and print the page at the kitchen table. Use bigger lines for a small hand and smaller ones as control grows.

Special education and support staff
Build a page for one student with exactly the rows they need, faded or dotted, with or without start dots, and print as many copies as the session calls for.
How EMStudio's tracing worksheet generator is different
Many tracing pages are fixed files, hide the download behind a sign-up, or add a logo to the sheet. This one is built by the team behind a full teacher planner, and it treats a tracing page as part of your lesson.

Free, with nothing held back
The full PDF, both paper sizes, and printing, all without an account or a daily limit. The only mark on the page is a small "Made with EMStudio" footer line.

Your rows, your size
Type the exact letters, numbers, or short words to trace, and choose line size, dot style, and repeats. You never hunt for the one fixed sheet that nearly fits.

Part of a full teacher planner
A tracing page is one small part of a lesson. When you are ready, EMStudio's lesson planner holds the rest: every class's lessons on a weekly calendar, beside your students, grades, and attendance.
