What is a spelling worksheet generator?

A spelling worksheet generator turns one list of spelling words into practice pages. You pick the activities, and each one gets its own page: putting the words in ABC order, writing each word three times, filling in missing letters, matching word shapes, unscrambling letters, look and cover, or writing sentences. The pages that have answers also get an answer key. Add a title, then download the PDF. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.

When do you use a spelling worksheet?

Whenever a week's list needs more than copying the words out. Three moments where a custom packet beats a premade one:

A teacher at a desk typing a weekly spelling list into a laptop while a printed spelling packet sits beside the keyboard

The weekly spelling list

Paste Monday's list and print a packet that uses exactly those words. Students put them in order, fill in letters, and unscramble them, so they see each word several ways before Friday's test, and you do not build a sheet by hand.

A student at a table writing letters into the boxes of a word shapes activity while a pencil case sits beside the page

Homework and word work centers

Pick two or three activities for a take-home packet, or print one activity per station for a rotation. Each activity is its own page, so you can hand out only the pages you want.

Intervention and extra practice

For a student who needs more repetition, choose Write 3 Times and Look, Cover, Write. For a quick check on what stuck, use Missing Letters and Unscramble. The guided lines give small hands a clear place to start each letter.

Core features of
a spelling worksheet generator

A good spelling worksheet maker takes your list and gets a clean packet out the other end. Here is what this one does, from the first word to the printed pages.

Type or paste your spelling words

Put one word on each line, up to 40. A note under the box counts your words and your activities, and warns you if the sheet will use only the first 40. Repeated words are used once.

Pick the activities you want

Seven activities sit in a row of buttons: ABC Order, Write 3×, Missing Letters, Word Shapes, Unscramble, Look & Cover, and Sentences. Switch any on or off, and each one you keep gets its own page.

Plain lines or guided lines

Choose Plain for a single writing line, or Guided for a top line and a dashed middle line, like handwriting paper. Pick a small, medium, or large text size, and add your own title or keep Spelling Practice.

An answer key for the pages that have answers

ABC Order, Missing Letters, Word Shapes, and Unscramble have answers, so the Answer Key tab fills them in on those pages. Press New Puzzles for a different order and different missing letters from the same words.

  • New Puzzles mixes the same words again
  • Key always matches the sheet you see

Download the PDF or print it

The Worksheet and Answer Key download buttons give you two PDFs. Print sends the pages to the printer. Choose US Letter or A4, and switch the Name and Date row off if you want.

How to make
a spelling worksheet

Five steps from a blank page to a spelling packet, and typing the words is the longest part.

Type your spelling words

Put one word on each line, up to 40, or paste this week's list from a document. The note under the box shows how many words and activities the packet has.

Type one word per line

Pick your activities

Press the activity buttons to switch them on or off. Four are on to start. At least one always stays on, and every activity you keep gets its own page.

Switch activities on

Choose lines, size, and a title

Pick Plain or Guided lines and a text size. The title reads "Spelling Practice" until you type your own. Each page also prints its own short instruction for students.

Lines, size, and title

Press New Puzzles if you want another

Press New Puzzles to shuffle the ABC word bank, the missing letters, and the scrambles. Switch to Answer Key to see the answers filled in on those pages.

New Puzzles, new order

Download or print

Choose US Letter or A4, then download the Worksheet for the students and the Answer Key for yourself. Or press Print to send the pages to the printer.

More than a spelling template

A premade spelling sheet uses someone else's words. This one builds a packet from yours, one activity per page, with a key where there are answers. It runs in any browser, including a locked-down school laptop.

Seven activities, one list

ABC Order, Write 3×, Missing Letters, Word Shapes, Unscramble, Look & Cover, and Sentences all come from the same words.

One activity per page

Word Shapes boxes

Each letter gets a box. Tall letters like b, d, and t reach up, and g, j, p, q, and y hang down, so students match the shape.

Boxes match each shape

A word bank that is never in order

On the ABC Order page, the word bank is mixed so it is never already sorted. Students have to do the alphabetizing.

A word bank, never sorted

Missing letters, never all

About two in five letters are left out of each word, and at least one letter always stays. Spaces are large enough for a pencil.

Letters missing, not all

Your settings are remembered

Your words and settings stay in this browser, so you can close the tab and pick the same packet up later. Nothing is uploaded.

Your words are still here

Free, and no watermark

No account, no sign-up, and no logo across the page. The only mark is a small "Made with EMStudio" line in the footer.

Who is the spelling worksheet generator for?

Anyone who needs spelling practice built around a specific list. If a premade sheet never quite matches this week's words, it is for you.

Weekly lists, sight words, and unit vocabulary. Type the words for your class, choose the activities, print a packet for every student, and keep the answer key for yourself.

Tutors and homeschool parents

Make a packet for this week's words and print it at the kitchen table. Choose Guided lines and Write 3 Times for a young writer, or Sentences for an older child.

How EMStudio's spelling worksheet generator is different

Many spelling worksheet generators bury the download behind a sign-up, add a logo to the page, or give you only one kind of sheet. This one is built by the team behind a full teacher planner, and it treats a worksheet as part of your lesson.

Free, with nothing held back

The full PDF, the answer key, both paper sizes, and printing, all without an account or a daily limit. The only mark on the page is a small "Made with EMStudio" footer line.

A whole packet, not one sheet

Pick several activities and get a page for each in one PDF. Long lists continue onto extra pages, with the activity heading repeated on each.

A worksheet is one small part of a lesson. When you are ready, EMStudio's lesson planner holds the rest: every class's lessons on a weekly calendar, beside your students, grades, and attendance.
