What is a tracing name generator?

A tracing name generator turns a name into a practice page where a child traces the letters and then writes the name alone. This one makes a separate page for every name you type, also called name tracing sheets. The first copy is solid so a child can see how it is written, and the copies after it are dotted. Green dots mark where each stroke starts. Download the PDF and print it.

When do you use name tracing sheets?

Whenever a child is learning to write the name they answer to every day. Three moments where a page made for each child beats one shared sheet:

A teacher at a desk pasting a class list into a laptop while a stack of printed name tracing pages sits beside the keyboard

The first weeks of school

Paste your class list and print one page for every child. Each child traces their own name at their own desk, and you see who already writes it, who needs the dots, and who needs more practice.

At home before school starts

Type your child's name and print a page for the kitchen table. Your child traces it a few times a day, and a few weeks later the name has gone from dots to a line of letters written alone.

Center time and morning work

Put a name page at the writing center or in the morning tub. Children find their own name, trace it, and fill the blank rows at the bottom, which gives you a quick look at how their writing is growing.

Core features of
a tracing name generator

A good name tracing page is made for one child and is easy to follow. Here is what this one does, from the first name to the printed sheet.

Type or paste your names

Put one name on each line, up to 60, and each one gets its own page. Paste a class list straight from a document. A hint under the box counts the pages, and tells you if a letter can't be traced or the list is too long.

A solid name to follow, dots to trace

Row one starts with the name written solid, then copies of it in dots along the row. Every row below has dotted copies on three guide lines. Green dots show where each stroke begins. Accented letters, hyphens, and spaces are drawn too.

Dots or faded letters

Set Tracing to Dots for evenly spaced dots, or Faded for light gray letters a child traces over like a stencil. Set Letters to As Typed, or ABC to print every name in capitals. Switch Starting dots Off if you do not want them.

Blank rows and three letter sizes

Blank rows leave empty guide lines at the bottom for the child to write the name alone. Choose from none up to 8, and a hint tells you when the page only has room for fewer. Pick a letter size of one half, three quarters, or one inch.

Download the PDF or print it

The Worksheet download button gives you a PDF with a page for every name. Print sends the pages to the printer. Choose US Letter or A4, edit the title and directions, and switch the Name and Date row on if you want it.

How to make
a name tracing page

Five steps from a class list to a stack of name pages, and typing the names is the longest part.

Type your names

Put one name on each line, or paste a class list from a document. The hint under the box shows how many names you have, one page each.

One name per line

Choose capitals or as typed

Set Letters to As Typed to keep each name exactly as you wrote it, or ABC to print every name in capital letters. The sheet changes as you pick.

Capitals or as typed

Set the dots and blank rows

Choose Dots or Faded for the tracing, turn Starting dots On or Off, and pick how many Blank rows to leave for writing the name alone.

Green starting dots

Add a title and directions

The title reads "My Name" until you type your own. The directions ask the child to trace the name, and to start at the green dots. Edit either one, and switch the Name and Date row on if you need it.

Add your own title

Download or print

Choose US Letter or A4, then download the Worksheet as a PDF. Or press Print to send the pages to the printer. Each name comes out on its own page.

More than a blank template

A premade name tracing sheet has one name on it, or a fixed font. This one builds a page for every name on your list, with the letters, lines, and starting dots already drawn. It runs in any browser, including a locked-down school laptop.

Green dots where each stroke starts

Every letter gets a green starting dot at the start of each stroke, so a child begins in the right place. Switch them Off for a cleaner page.

Long names shrink to fit

Long names shrink to fit

A long name is drawn smaller so it still fits on a row. Short names keep the full letter size you chose, and a hint tells you when blank rows won't fit.

Untraceable symbols are left out

A title and directions on every page

Every page carries a title and a line of directions that change with your settings. The Name and Date row is off by default, and switches on in one click.

Who is the tracing name generator for?

Anyone helping a child learn to write their name. If a shared sheet takes too long to set up for every child, it is for you.

A teacher handing out printed name tracing pages to a row of young children at their desks

Classroom teachers

Paste the class list, print a page for every child, and hand them out at the start of the year. Use ABC for capitals, or As Typed for the name the way you teach it.

A parent and a child at a kitchen table with a laptop and a printed name tracing page being traced with a pencil

Parents and homeschool families

Type your child's name, or the names of everyone in the family, and print the pages at home. Add the blank rows when your child is ready to write the name without the dots.

Tutors and aides

Make a page for each child you work with, in the letter size that suits their hand. A new name takes a few seconds to add, so you can print one the day a child joins.

How EMStudio's tracing name generator is different

Many name tracing tools make one name at a time, hide the download behind a sign-up, or add a logo to the sheet. This one is built by the team behind a full teacher planner, and it treats a name page as part of your lesson.

A page for every child at once

Type a whole class list and every name gets its own page, with its own letters, dots, and rows. You never retype a name or copy a template once per child.

A name page is one small part of the first weeks. When you are ready, EMStudio's lesson planner holds the rest: every class's lessons on a weekly calendar, beside your students, grades, and attendance.
