Handwriting Worksheet Generator
Type letters, words or sentences and get rows to trace with practice lines underneath, ready to print as a PDF. Free in your browser, no sign-up.
What is a handwriting worksheet generator?
A handwriting worksheet generator, also called a handwriting worksheet maker, turns the text you type into a practice sheet. Each line is printed in print letters on three-line writing rows, with blank rows underneath for students to copy it. This one takes letters, words, numbers, and whole sentences, one line each. Choose dotted, faded, or solid letters to trace, set how many practice rows follow, and download the PDF.

When do you use a handwriting worksheet?
Whenever students need to practice forming letters, not just read them. Three moments where a sheet made from your own text beats a premade one:

Letters you are teaching this week
Type the letters you are teaching, such as Aa Bb Cc, and print a sheet in a minute. Each pair is traced once and followed by blank rows. Next week, type the next letters and print again.

Names, words, and sentences
Practice the words your class is learning, or a sentence that matters to them, like "I can write neatly." Long sentences carry on to the next row, so you never have to shrink them to fit.

Fading the support away
Start a student on dotted letters, move to light gray ones, then to solid letters to copy. Same text, three levels of help, so a student who needs less can move on without a new sheet from you.
Core features of a
handwriting worksheet generator
A good handwriting worksheet generator takes your text and gives back a clean sheet with the writing rows already drawn. Here is what this one does, from the first letter to the printed page.
Type letters, words, or sentences
Put one line of text on each row of the box. Mix letters, words, numbers, and sentences on one sheet. A note under the box counts your lines and says when a character cannot be drawn.
- One line of text per row
- Letters, numbers, and sentences
- A note when a character is left out
Dots, faded, or solid letters
Dots print each letter as a row of dots to trace. Faded prints light gray letters to trace over. Solid prints dark letters for students to copy on the rows below. Each choice has a short hint under it.
- Dotted letters to trace
- Light gray letters to trace over
- Dark letters to copy below
Guide lines and practice rows
Every row has a top line, a dashed middle line, and a baseline, the way print is taught. Under each traced line, add zero to three blank rows for students to write it themselves. A line and its rows stay on the same page.
- Top line, dashed middle, baseline
- Zero to three practice rows
- A line and its rows stay together
Repeat a letter along the row
Switch Each line to Repeat and a short line, like a single letter, is copied along its row as many times as it fits. Turn on Starting dots to mark where each stroke begins with a green dot.
- Short lines copied along the row
- Green dots where strokes start
- Once or Repeat for each sheet
Download the PDF or print it
The Worksheet button gives you the PDF, and Print sends the sheet to the printer. Choose US Letter or A4, and switch the Name and Date row off if you want. The rest of the last page stays lined for extra practice.
- One PDF: the Worksheet
- US Letter or A4 paper
- Name and Date row you can switch off
How to make a
handwriting worksheet
Five steps from a blank page to a stack of practice sheets, and typing the text is the longest part.
Type your text
Put one line on each row of the box: a pair of letters, a word, or a sentence. The note under the box counts your lines, and you can replace the example text at any time.
Pick how the letters print
Choose Dots, Faded, or Solid under Tracing. Turn Starting dots on if students need to see where each stroke begins, and pick Once or Repeat for each line.
Set the practice rows
Choose zero to three blank rows under each traced line, and a Letter size for the line height. The foot of the preview tells you the size of the rows.
Add a title and directions
The title reads "Handwriting Practice" until you type your own. The directions change with your settings, such as "Trace each line, then write it on the line below." Edit either one, or switch the Name and Date row off.
Download or print
Choose US Letter or A4, then download the Worksheet as a PDF. Or press Print to send the sheet to the printer.
That's the whole sheet
Type the text once and print as many practice sheets as you need. The generator is at the top of this page.

Get Started for FreeMore than a handwriting worksheet template
A premade sheet practices someone else's letters. This one practices yours, draws the rows, and keeps the support as light as a student needs. It runs in any browser, including a locked-down school laptop.
Long lines carry on
A sentence that is too long for one row carries on to the next. Type it as you would write it, and the sheet breaks it between words.
Unknown characters are flagged
If a character cannot be drawn yet, a note names it and leaves it off the sheet. You are never handed a page with a blank gap.
Three line sizes
Pick small, medium, or large letters. The preview names the rows, three-eighths, a half, or three-quarters of an inch, so you know what you will print.
US Letter or A4
Pick the paper you print on and the page is laid out for it. The practice sheet downloads as one PDF.
Your settings are remembered
Your text and settings stay in this browser, so you can close the tab and pick the same sheet up later. Nothing is uploaded.
Free, and no watermark
No account, no sign-up, and no logo across the page. The only mark is a small "Made with EMStudio" line in the footer.
Who is the handwriting worksheet generator for?
Anyone who teaches students to form letters and wants practice built from the words in front of them. If a premade sheet never matches what you taught this week, it is for you.

Classroom teachers
Letters of the week, names, and classroom words. Type the text for your class, print a copy for every student, and change the level of support for the students who need more or less.

Tutors and homeschool parents
Make a sheet for one learner and print it at the kitchen table. Use dotted letters at first, then faded, then solid, with the same text each time.

ESL and language teachers
Build a sheet from the new words in a lesson. Accented letters such as é, ñ, and ç are drawn too, so learners can practice the spelling they will meet.
How EMStudio's handwriting worksheet generator is different
Many handwriting generators bury the download behind a sign-up, add a logo to the page, or only offer a fixed list of letters. This one is built by the team behind a full teacher planner, and it treats a practice sheet as part of your lesson.

Free, with nothing held back
The full PDF, every tracing style, both paper sizes, and printing, all without an account or a daily limit. The only mark on the page is a small "Made with EMStudio" footer line.

Your text, not a fixed list
Type any letters, words, or sentences, and the sheet is drawn from them. Every row has its guide lines, and the practice rows are ready to write on.

Part of a full teacher planner
A practice sheet is one small part of a week. When you are ready, EMStudio's lesson planner holds the rest: every class's lessons on a weekly calendar, beside your students, grades, and attendance.
