What is a sentence scramble generator?

A sentence scramble generator turns your sentences into a worksheet where the words of each sentence are mixed up and the student puts them back in order. This one shuffles every sentence you type, prints the words as cards, and adds a line to write on or a strip to glue on. The words keep their capitals and punctuation, so students have clues. It also makes an answer key. Add a title, then download the PDF. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.

When do you use a sentence scramble?

Whenever students should build a sentence from its parts, one word at a time. Three moments where a custom sheet beats a premade one:

A teacher at a desk typing short sentences into a laptop while a printed sentence scramble sits beside the keyboard

Sentence building and writing practice

Type sentences that use this week's sight words or the pattern you are teaching. Students read each word, decide which one starts the sentence, and write it out in order, so they practice capitals, periods, and word order without a drill.

A student at a desk writing a sentence on a line under scrambled word cards while classmates still work in the background

Early finishers and sub plans

Keep a few sheets in the folder for the student who finishes first, or leave one in the substitute plans. Every sheet comes with an answer key, so whoever is covering the room can check it in a minute.

Literacy centers and morning work

Print the Cut & Glue version for a center: students cut out the word cards, put them in order, and glue them on the strip. Or print the Write It version as quiet morning work. Print a fresh copy for the whole class in minutes.

Core features of
a sentence scramble generator

A good sentence scramble maker takes your sentences and gets a clean sheet out the other end. Here is what this one does, from the first sentence to the printed page.

Type your sentences

Put one sentence on each line, up to 20 sentences. Each sentence can have up to 16 words. A note under the box says how many sentences you have, and it tells you if a line has only one word and was left out.

  • One sentence per line, up to 20
  • Up to 16 words in a sentence
  • A note counts your sentences

Words become cards

Each sentence is shuffled until the order changes. The words print as numbered cards. They keep their capital letters and punctuation, so the capital shows which card starts the sentence and the period shows which ends it.

  • Words shuffled until the order changes
  • Capitals and periods stay as clues
  • Numbered sentences, cards in rows
Every sentence cut to cards

Write It or Cut & Glue

With Write It, students write the sentence on a line under the cards, and you pick Plain or Guided lines. With Cut & Glue, the cards touch so one cut line separates them, and a strip below is as long as the cards.

  • Plain or Guided lines
  • Cut & Glue cards and a glue strip

An answer key for every sheet

Switch between the Worksheet and the Answer Key. The key writes each sentence in order, on the line or in the glue strip. Press New Scramble for a different shuffle of the same sentences.

The Worksheet and Answer Key download buttons give you two PDFs. Print sends the sheet to the printer. Choose US Letter or A4, and switch the Name and Date row off if you want.

How to make
a sentence scramble

Five steps from a blank page to a stack of worksheets, and typing the sentences is the longest part.

Type your sentences

Put one sentence on each line, up to 20. Use capitals and end punctuation the way you want students to see them. The note under the box shows how many sentences you have.

Type one sentence per line

Choose Write It or Cut & Glue

Pick Write It for a line under the cards, then Plain or Guided lines. Pick Cut & Glue for cards to cut out and a strip to glue them on. The Lines setting dims for Cut & Glue.

Pick Cut & Glue

Add a title and directions

The title reads "Sentence Scramble" until you type your own. The directions follow your choice: Write It asks students to write the sentence on the line, and Cut & Glue asks them to cut out and glue the words.

Add your own title

Press New Scramble if you want another

Press New Scramble to shuffle the same sentences a different way. Switch to Answer Key to see each sentence written in order. Do it as often as you like.

New Scramble, new order

Download or print

Choose US Letter or A4, then download the Worksheet for the student page and the Answer Key for yours. Or press Print to send the sheet to the printer.

More than a scramble template

A premade sheet uses someone else's sentences. This one shuffles yours, keeps the capitals and periods as clues, and gives you the key. It runs in any browser, including a locked-down school laptop.

Capitals and periods stay

Words keep their capital letters and punctuation, so students can spot the card that starts the sentence and the one that ends it.

Capitals and periods stay

Cards that cut cleanly

In Cut & Glue the cards touch, so one cut line separates two words. The glue strip below is as long as the cards laid end to end.

Cards touch, strip below

Plain or Guided lines

Write It offers a plain line, or a Guided line with a dashed middle guide for younger writers learning where letters sit.

Who is the sentence scramble generator for?

Anyone who needs scrambled sentences built around specific words or patterns. If a premade sheet never quite matches what you are teaching, it is for you.

Classroom teachers

Sight words, sentence patterns, and unit vocabulary in a sentence. Type the sentences for your class, print a copy for every student, and keep the answer key for yourself.

Tutors and homeschool parents

Make a sheet for this week's reading and print it at the kitchen table. Use Guided lines and short sentences for a beginning writer, or longer sentences for an older child.

ESL and language teachers

Build a sheet from the sentences in a lesson. Putting the words in order shows learners how English sentences are built, and the answer key lets you check the sheet quickly.

How EMStudio's sentence scramble generator is different

Many scramble generators bury the download behind a sign-up, add a logo to the page, or give you no answer key. This one is built by the team behind a full teacher planner, and it treats a worksheet as part of your lesson.

Free, with nothing held back

The full PDF, the answer key, both paper sizes, and printing, all without an account or a daily limit. The only mark on the page is a small "Made with EMStudio" footer line.

An answer key every time

Every sheet comes with its own key, with each sentence written in order. You never have to put the words back in order yourself to be sure it is right.

A worksheet is one small part of a lesson. When you are ready, EMStudio's lesson planner holds the rest: every class's lessons on a weekly calendar, beside your students, grades, and attendance.
