What is a maze generator?

A maze generator draws a new maze each time you ask, so you never hunt for a sheet that fits. This one builds a square maze or a round one, from 5 to 60 squares across, and puts one, two, or four on a page. Every maze has exactly one way through, so the answer key can draw it as a red path. Add a title, download the PDF, and hand it out. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.

When do you use a printed maze?

Whenever students need a quiet, hands-on task with a pencil. Three moments where a fresh maze helps:

A young student at a desk tracing a pencil through a printed maze while classmates work on other sheets nearby

Early finishers and centers

Print a few mazes at different sizes and keep them in a folder. A student who finishes first takes one, and a small maze with big squares works as a center for younger children building pencil control.

A teacher kneeling beside a child at a table who follows a path through a large-square maze with a fat pencil

Fine motor and focus practice

Tracing a path with a pencil builds the control kindergarten and first grade writing needs. Choose a low size for wide corridors, then move up as students steady their hands and stay with the task.

A substitute teacher's desk with a folder, a stack of printed maze pages, and rain on the classroom window behind it

Sub plans and rainy days

Leave a sheet with two or four mazes per page and an answer key in the substitute folder. Whoever covers the room can check any maze at a glance, and no one needs to know the lesson to run it.

Core features of
a maze generator

A good maze maker gives you a clean page with a way through it. Here is what this one does, from the shape you pick to the printed sheet.

Square or circle

Choose a square maze, with Start at the top and Finish at the bottom, or a circle maze, where students begin at the star in the middle and work out to the Finish arrow at the bottom.

  • Square maze from Start to Finish
  • Circle maze that starts at a star
  • Directions change to match the shape

Pick the size

Set the Size from 5 to 60 squares across. The default is 15. A hint under the stepper names the level, from easy to very hard. For circle mazes the size sets the number of rings.

  • A stepper from 5 to 60
  • A hint says easy, medium, hard, or very hard
  • Circle mazes show their ring count

One way through, every time

Each maze is carved so that every square connects and there is exactly one path from the way in to the way out. No dead-end puzzle without a solution, and no second route to argue about.

  • Exactly one path from start to finish
  • Long winding routes with many dead ends
  • New Mazes carves different ones on demand

An answer key for every maze

Switch between the Worksheet and the Answer Key. The key shows the same maze with the solution drawn as a red path from the way in to the way out, so you can check a student's page in seconds.

  • Red solution path on the key
  • The key matches the maze you see
  • Mazes are numbered when there are several
Worksheet and answer key

Download the PDF or print it

The Worksheet and Answer Key download buttons give you two PDFs. Print sends the sheet to the printer. Put one, two, or four mazes on a page, choose US Letter or A4, and switch the Name and Date row off if you like.

  • Two PDFs: the worksheet and the key
  • 1, 2, or 4 mazes per page
  • Editable title, directions, and Name and Date row

How to make
a maze

Five steps from a blank page to a printed maze, and none of them involve drawing.

Choose the shape

Pick Square or Circle. A square maze runs from Start at the top to Finish at the bottom. A circle maze starts at a star in the middle and ends at the Finish arrow below.

Pick a shape

Set the size

Use the Size stepper to go from 5 to 60. The hint under it says how many squares across and how hard it is. Start near 10 for young students and go higher for older ones.

Set the size

Choose mazes per page

Pick 1, 2, or 4 mazes per page. With more than one, each maze gets a number. Add a title and directions, or leave the automatic ones. Switch off the Name and Date row if you do not need it.

1, 2, or 4 per page

Press New Mazes for another

Press New Mazes for a different set with the same settings. Switch to Answer Key to see each solution drawn in red. Do it as often as you like until the page looks right.

New Mazes, new paths

Download or print

Choose US Letter or A4, then download the Worksheet for the student page and the Answer Key for yours. Or press Print to send the sheet to the printer.

More than a maze template

A premade maze has one size and one shape. This one builds a new maze to your settings, checks that it has a single solution, and gives you the key. It runs in any browser, including a locked-down school laptop.

Circle mazes with a star

Round mazes are built in rings around a star in the middle, with more cells in each ring further out. Students work outward to the exit at the bottom.

Difficulty you can read

The hint under the Size stepper names the level: easy, medium, hard, or very hard. You see how hard a maze is before you print it.

8 squares across, easy.
15 squares across, medium.
28 squares across, hard.
50 squares across, very hard.
Easy to very hard

One, two, or four per page

Fit more mazes on a sheet to save paper or give a student several to choose from. Each is numbered, and the Name and Date row sits at the top.

Four mazes on a page

US Letter or A4

Pick the paper you print on and the maze is laid out to fill it. The worksheet and the answer key are two separate PDFs.

Who is the maze generator for?

Anyone who wants a maze at the right size without searching for one. If a premade sheet is always too easy or too hard, it is for you.

A teacher handing printed maze pages to a row of students at their desks

Classroom teachers

Early finishers, centers, indoor recess, and sub plans. Print a stack at the size your class needs, in the shape you want, and keep the answer key for yourself.

A parent and two children of different ages at a kitchen table, each tracing a maze of a different size with a pencil

Tutors and homeschool parents

Make an easy maze for a young child and a harder one for an older sibling. Print them at the kitchen table, and use the key to check the work.

A therapist sitting beside a child at a small table as the child traces a wide-path maze with a thick pencil

Occupational therapists and aides

Pencil-tracing practice needs paths at a range of widths. Set a low size for wide corridors, step up as control improves, and print a fresh page for every session.

How EMStudio's maze generator is different

Many maze generators hide the download behind a sign-up, put a logo on the page, or leave out the solution. This one is built by the team behind a full teacher planner, and it treats a maze as part of your lesson.

Free, with nothing held back

The full PDF, the answer key, both paper sizes, and printing, all without an account or a daily limit. The only mark on the page is a small "Made with EMStudio" footer line.

An answer key every time

Every maze comes with its own key, with the solution drawn as a red path. Because each maze has one way through, there is one answer to check against.

A maze is one small part of a lesson. When you are ready, EMStudio's lesson planner holds the rest: every class's lessons on a weekly calendar, beside your students, grades, and attendance.
