Matching Worksheet Generator
Type each pair on its own line and get a printable matching sheet with the answers mixed up and an answer key, ready as a PDF in seconds. Free in your browser, no sign-up.
What is a matching worksheet generator?
A matching worksheet generator turns a list of pairs into a finished matching sheet. You type a term and its match on each line, like "cow, calf". The tool puts the terms in a numbered column on the left and the matches in a lettered column on the right, in a mixed-up order. It also makes an answer key that shows the right letter for every term. Add a title, download the PDF, and hand it out. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.

When do you use a matching worksheet?
Whenever students should connect two things they have just learned. Three moments where a matching sheet built from your own pairs beats a premade one:

Vocabulary and unit review
Put each key term on the left and a student-friendly definition on the right. Students read both columns and link each term to its meaning. It is a quick check of a whole unit that fits on one page, and you grade it against the key in a minute.

Early finishers and sub plans
Keep a stack of matching sheets in the folder for the student who finishes first, or leave one in the substitute plans. The answer key is its own PDF, so whoever covers the room can check the sheets without knowing the material.

Early readers and language practice
Match a word to its picture word, a capital letter to its small one, a country to its capital, or an English word to its Spanish one. Choose Draw Lines for younger students who can trace a line more easily than they can write a letter.
Core features of
a matching worksheet generator
A good matching worksheet generator takes your pairs and gets a clean, mixed-up sheet out the other end. Here is what this one does, from the first pair to the printed page.
Type one pair on each line
Put a term and its match on each line, like "dog, puppy". A comma, a colon, a dash between spaces, or a tab all split the pair. You can use up to 26 pairs. A hint under the box counts the pairs and names any line that has no match yet.
- A term, a comma, then its match
- Up to 26 pairs on a sheet
- A hint names any line missing a match
Answers mixed up for you
The terms stay in order down the left, numbered. The matches go down the right in a random order, lettered, and no answer sits level with its own term. Long entries wrap onto a second line. More pairs than fit flow onto a second page.
- Numbered terms, lettered matches
- No answer level with its own term
- Long entries wrap, extra pairs flow on
Write letters or draw lines
Under Students, choose Write Letters to put a blank beside each term for the matching letter, or Draw Lines to put a dot on each side for students to connect. A hint below the choice says what students will do.
- Write Letters adds a blank by each term
- Draw Lines adds a dot on each side
- Choose a small, medium, or large text size
An answer key for every sheet
Switch between the Worksheet and the Answer Key. With Write Letters, the key fills in the right letter on every blank. With Draw Lines, the key draws every line from term to match. Press Shuffle Answers for a new order from the same pairs.
- Right letter filled in on each blank
- Every line drawn for Draw Lines
- Shuffle Answers gives a new order
Download the PDF or print it
The Worksheet and Answer Key download buttons give you two PDFs. Print sends the sheet to the printer. Choose US Letter or A4, edit the title and directions, and switch the Name and Date row off if you want.
- Two PDFs: the worksheet and the key
- US Letter or A4 paper
- Editable title, directions, and Name and Date row
How to make
a matching worksheet
Five steps from a blank page to a stack of matching sheets, and choosing the pairs is the longest part.
Type your pairs
Put one pair on each line, separated by a comma, or paste a list from a document. The hint under the box shows how many pairs the sheet has.
Choose how students match
Under Students, pick Write Letters or Draw Lines. The directions change to fit, and a hint says what students will do on the page.
Set the title and text size
The title reads Matching until you type your own, like "Animal Babies". Edit the directions, and pick a small, medium, or large text size.
Press Shuffle Answers if you want another order
Press Shuffle Answers for a new random order of the matches from the same pairs. Switch to Answer Key to check that every term has its letter or line.
Download or print
Choose US Letter or A4, then download the Worksheet for the student page and the Answer Key for yours. Or press Print to send the sheet to the printer.
That's the whole matching sheet
Type the pairs once and print as many copies as you need. The generator is at the top of this page.

Get Started for FreeMore than a worksheet template
A premade matching sheet uses someone else's pairs. This one builds the page from yours, mixes the answers, and gives you the key. It runs in any browser, including a locked-down school laptop.
No answer beside its own term
The matches are mixed up on every page, and none lands level with its own term, so students cannot read the answer across.
Missing matches are named
If a line has no comma, the hint names the line number and tells you to put a comma between the two halves. The other pairs still print.
A header ready to print
The title reads Matching and the directions tell students what to do. Edit either one, or switch off the Name and Date row.
US Letter or A4
Pick the paper you print on and the page is laid out for it. The worksheet and the answer key are two separate PDFs.
Your settings are remembered
Your pairs and settings stay in this browser, so you can close the tab and pick the same sheet up later. Nothing is uploaded.
Free, and no watermark
No account, no sign-up, and no logo across the page. The only mark is a small "Made with EMStudio" line in the footer.
Who is the matching worksheet generator for?
Anyone who needs a matching sheet built around specific pairs. If a premade worksheet never quite matches what you are teaching, it is for you.

Classroom teachers
Unit vocabulary, sight words, and facts to review. Write the pairs in your students' language, print a copy for every student, and keep the answer key for yourself.

Tutors and homeschool parents
Make a matching sheet for this week's lesson and print it at the kitchen table. Use Draw Lines for a young learner and Write Letters for an older child.

Language and special education teachers
Pair a word with its translation, a term with its picture word, or a skill with an example. Pick the text size that suits your students and print as many copies as you need.
How EMStudio's matching worksheet generator is different
Many worksheet generators bury the download behind a sign-up, add a logo to the page, or give you no answer key. This one is built by the team behind a full teacher planner, and it treats a worksheet as part of your lesson.

Free, with nothing held back
The full PDF, the answer key, both paper sizes, and printing, all without an account or a daily limit. The only mark on the page is a small "Made with EMStudio" footer line.

Your pairs, not a stock list
You choose each pair, so the sheet checks what you taught, at the reading level of your class. The generator does the mixing and the layout.

Part of a full teacher planner
A worksheet is one small part of a lesson. When you are ready, EMStudio's lesson planner holds the rest: every class's lessons on a weekly calendar, beside your students, grades, and attendance.
