Fill-in-the-Blank Generator
Paste a passage, choose the words to blank out, and get a printable fill-in-the-blank worksheet with a word bank and an answer key. Download it as a PDF in seconds. Free in your browser, no sign-up.
What is a fill-in-the-blank generator?
A fill-in-the-blank generator turns a passage or a list of sentences into a worksheet with missing words. You paste your text and mark the words to blank out with square brackets, or let the tool blank out every 5th or 7th word for you. The blanks print as lines, the missing words go into a word bank, and an answer key fills each blank in. Add a title, then download the PDF. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.

When do you use a fill-in-the-blank worksheet?
Whenever students should recall the key words, not just read past them. Three moments where a sheet built from your own text beats a premade one:

Science and social studies review
Paste a paragraph from your unit notes and put square brackets around the terms students must know. They read the passage, pick each term from the word bank, and write it in. It is a quick check that the vocabulary stuck, and it takes you a minute to make.

Reading comprehension and cloze practice
Paste a reading passage and set Blanks to Every 5th or Every 7th. The tool leaves the first sentence whole and blanks out words after it, so students use the context to work out each missing word. Same passage, a gentler or a harder version.

Homework, sub plans, and early finishers
Keep a few sheets ready for the student who finishes first, or leave one in the substitute plans. Every sheet comes with an answer key, so whoever is covering the room can check the work in a minute without knowing the topic.
Core features of
a fill-in-the-blank generator
A good fill-in-the-blank maker takes your text and gets a clean sheet out the other end. Here is what this one does, from the pasted passage to the printed page.
Paste a passage or type sentences
Type or paste up to 8,000 characters. Put square brackets around each word you want blanked out, like "Plants need sunlight and water" with sunlight and water in brackets. A note under the box counts your blanks and tells you if there are none yet.
- Up to 8,000 characters of text
- Square brackets mark the blanks
- A note counts your blanks
Marked, every 5th, or every 7th word
Choose Marked to blank out only the words you bracketed. Choose Every 5th or Every 7th and the tool makes a cloze test, blanking out a word at that spacing after the first sentence. Punctuation stays outside the blank.
- Marked blanks only the words you chose
- Every 5th or 7th word for a cloze test
- First sentence stays whole
Passage or numbered sentences
Show as Passage keeps your text as paragraphs with the blanks inside. Show as Sentences puts each line on its own as a numbered item, with room between them. Pick the one that suits the text you pasted.
- Passage keeps your paragraphs
- Sentences numbers each line
- Word bank on or off
An answer key for every sheet
Switch between the Worksheet and the Answer Key. The key writes each missing word on its blank in red, on the same page layout as the worksheet. Press Mix Up Word Bank to shuffle the order of the words in the bank.
- Each blank filled in, in red
- Mix Up Word Bank reorders the bank
- Key always matches the sheet you see
Download the PDF or print it
The Worksheet and Answer Key download buttons give you two PDFs. Print sends the sheet to the printer. Choose US Letter or A4, and switch the Name and Date row off if you want.
- Two PDFs: the worksheet and the key
- US Letter or A4 paper
- Name and Date row you can switch off
How to make
a fill-in-the-blank worksheet
Five steps from a pasted passage to a stack of worksheets, and choosing the blanks is the longest part.
Paste your text and mark the words
Paste a passage or type some sentences. Put square brackets around each word to blank out. The note under the box counts the blanks you have so far.
Choose how the blanks are picked
Leave Blanks on Marked to use your brackets, or pick Every 5th or Every 7th for a cloze test. A line under the setting explains the choice, and the first sentence stays whole.
Show a passage or sentences, with a word bank
Pick Passage or Sentences under Show as. Under Word Bank, choose Show to list the missing words in a box, or Hide to make students recall them on their own.
Press Mix Up Word Bank if you want
The bank lists the missing words in a shuffled order. Press Mix Up Word Bank for a different order. Switch to Answer Key to see every blank filled in, in red.
Download or print
Add a title if you like. It reads "Fill in the Blanks" until you type your own. Choose US Letter or A4, download the Worksheet and the Answer Key, or press Print.
That's the whole worksheet
Paste the text once and print as many sheets as you need. The generator is at the top of this page.

A premade sheet uses someone else's passage. This one blanks out the words from yours, adds the word bank, and gives you the key. It runs in any browser, including a locked-down school laptop.
The first sentence stays whole
In a cloze test, the first sentence is left complete, so students get the topic before the first blank appears.
Every blank is the same width
Each blank is as wide as your longest missing word, so the length of a blank never gives the answer away.
Directions that match the sheet
With a word bank, the directions say to use the bank. Without one, they say to fill in each blank with the missing word.
US Letter or A4
Pick the paper you print on and the page is laid out for it. The worksheet and the answer key are two separate PDFs.
Your settings are remembered
Your text and settings stay in this browser, so you can close the tab and pick the same sheet up later. Nothing is uploaded.
Free, and no watermark
No account, no sign-up, and no logo across the page. The only mark is a small "Made with EMStudio" line in the footer.
Who is the fill-in-the-blank generator for?
Anyone who needs a fill-in-the-blank sheet built around a specific text. If a premade worksheet never quite matches what you are teaching, it is for you.

Classroom teachers
Unit terms, a class read-aloud, a paragraph from the textbook. Paste it in, choose the blanks, print a copy for every student, and keep the answer key for yourself.

Tutors and homeschool parents
Turn this week's reading into a sheet at the kitchen table. Use a short passage with a word bank for a younger child, or a longer one with the bank hidden for an older child.

ESL and language teachers
Paste a dialogue or a short text and blank out every 5th or 7th word. Learners use the surrounding words to work out what fits, and the answer key lets you check the sheet quickly.
How EMStudio's fill-in-the-blank generator is different
Many fill-in-the-blank makers bury the download behind a sign-up, add a logo to the page, or give you no answer key. This one is built by the team behind a full teacher planner, and it treats a worksheet as part of your lesson.

Free, with nothing held back
The full PDF, the answer key, both paper sizes, and printing, all without an account or a daily limit. The only mark on the page is a small "Made with EMStudio" footer line.

An answer key every time
Every sheet comes with its own key, with each missing word written on its blank. You never have to work the answers out again to be sure the sheet is right.

Part of a full teacher planner
A worksheet is one small part of a lesson. When you are ready, EMStudio's lesson planner holds the rest: every class's lessons on a weekly calendar, beside your students, grades, and attendance.
