What is a word wall maker?
A word wall maker turns a list of words into large printable cards for your classroom wall. You type the words, and the tool sorts them A to Z, adds a letter card before each new letter, and sizes the words to fit their cards. You choose how many cards go on a page, the lettering, and a color. Download the PDF, cut the cards apart, and put them up. A word wall generator like this needs nothing to install and no sign-up.

When do you use a word wall?
Whenever students need the words in front of them while they read and write. Three moments where cards made from your own list beat a premade set:

A new unit's vocabulary
Type the unit's key terms and print a card for each one. Hang them under their letters, and students can find a word, check its spelling, and use it in their writing. When the next unit starts, replace the list and print again.

Everyday words for early readers
Print the words your early readers meet most often, big enough to read from their seats. Choose School lettering, the ball-and-stick print children learn to write, so the cards match what they practice on paper.

Language classes and new words
Add the new words from this week's lesson to the wall as you teach them. Keep the words As Typed to match the order of the lesson, or sort A to Z so learners can look a word up fast.
Core features of
a word wall maker
A good word wall maker takes your list and hands back cards you can cut out and hang. Here is what this one does, from the first word to the printed pages.
Type or paste your words
Put one word on each line, or paste a list from a document. Repeated words are used once, and a note under the box counts your words. The sheet uses up to 400 words, and an example list sits in the box until you replace it.
- One word per line, up to 400 words
- Repeated words are used once
- A note counts your words
Sort A to Z, with letter cards
Order A to Z sorts your words and puts a letter card, such as Aa, before each new first letter. Choose As Typed to keep your own order, with no letter cards. Words that start with a number or symbol go under #.
- Sort A to Z or keep your order
- Letter cards switch on or off
- Numbers and symbols go under #
2, 3, 4, or 6 cards per page
Choose how many cards share a page. With 2, 3, or 4 they stack in one tall column, and with 6 they make two columns of three. Fewer cards per page means bigger words, and every card gets its own border.
- 2, 3, 4, or 6 cards per page
- Fewer per page means bigger words
- A border around every card
School or Classic lettering, in six colors
Pick School lettering, the ball-and-stick print children learn to write, or Classic, a bold block style. Then choose blue, red, green, purple, orange, or black for the card borders and the letter cards.
- School or Classic lettering
- Blue, red, green, purple, orange, or black
- Borders and letter cards take the color
Download the PDF or print it
The Worksheet button downloads every card as one PDF, and Print sends the same pages to the printer. Choose US Letter or A4. The pages hold only cards, with no title, no Name and Date row, and no answer key.
- One PDF with every card
- US Letter or A4 paper
- Print straight from the page
How to make
a word wall
Five steps from a blank page to a wall of cards, and typing the words is the longest part.
Type your words
Put one word on each line, or paste a list from a document. The cards build as you type, and the note under the box counts your words. The example list stays until you replace it.
Choose the order
Pick A to Z to sort the words and add a letter card for each new letter, or As Typed to keep your own order. Switch Letter cards off if you only want the words.
Set cards per page and lettering
Choose 2, 3, 4, or 6 cards per page, then School or Classic lettering. Fewer cards per page makes bigger words, and every word on the sheet prints at the same size.
Pick a color
Open the Color list and choose blue, red, green, purple, orange, or black. The card borders and the letter cards take that color on every page of the PDF.
Download or print
Choose US Letter or A4, then download the Worksheet. Or press Print to send the pages to the printer. Cut the cards apart along their borders and put them up.
That's the whole word wall
Type the list once and print cards for the whole wall. The generator is at the top of this page.

Get Started for FreeMore than a word wall template
A premade word wall set comes with someone else's words. This one makes cards from your list, in your order, with letter cards between them. It runs in any browser, including a locked-down school laptop.
One size for every card
The longest word sets the text size for the whole sheet, so every card looks even. One long word makes the whole set a little smaller.
Repeats are dropped
Type a word twice and it prints once, whatever the capital letters. The note under the box counts only the words that make cards.
Numbers sort under #
A word that starts with a number or symbol files under a # letter card. Accented first letters sort with their plain letter.
US Letter or A4
Pick the paper you print on and the cards are laid out for it. The tool starts on the size your region uses.
Your settings are remembered
Your words and settings stay in this browser, so you can close the tab and pick the same wall up later. Nothing is uploaded.
Free, and no watermark
No account, no sign-up, and no logo across the cards. The only mark is a small "Made with EMStudio" line in the footer.
Who is the word wall maker for?
Anyone who needs word cards built around a specific list. If a premade set never quite matches your words, it is for you.

Classroom teachers
Unit vocabulary, spelling words, and the words your class uses every day. Type the list, choose the lettering and color, and print a wall that matches what you are teaching this month.

Tutors and homeschool parents
Make a small wall for the corner of a room or the back of a door. Use 2 cards per page for big words a young reader sees from across the table.

Reading and language teachers
Keep a running list of the words a group is learning. Add new ones to the box, reprint, and the cards sort themselves, with a letter card ahead of each new letter.
How EMStudio's word wall maker is different
Many word wall makers bury the download behind a sign-up, add a logo to every card, or hand you a fixed set of words. This one is built by the team behind a full teacher planner, and it treats a word wall as part of your lesson.

Free, with nothing held back
The full PDF, both paper sizes, and printing, all without an account or a daily limit. The only mark on the page is a small "Made with EMStudio" footer line.

Your list, sorted for you
Change one word and the cards re-sort, the letter cards move, and the page count updates. You never lay out a template by hand.

Part of a full teacher planner
A word wall is one small part of a lesson. When you are ready, EMStudio's lesson planner holds the rest: every class's lessons on a weekly calendar, beside your students, grades, and attendance.
