The Vietnam grading system uses a 10-point scale, with 9–10 as the top band and 5 as the pass mark; there is no percent key. The Ministry of Education and Training sets the grading rules nationwide.

This page explains what Vietnamese grades mean and how grading works, with guidance for teachers working with students from Vietnam. It also covers related grading systems and sources used to verify the information.

What each Vietnamese grade means

Vietnamese school subjects are assessed on a 10-point scale, and results recorded on another scale must be converted to the 10-point scale. A pass starts at 5, and the top band is 9–10. There is no percentage key.

How grading works in Vietnam

Vietnam’s grading rules are set nationally by the Ministry of Education and Training.

The Ministry issued Circular No. 26/2020/TT-BGDĐT, amending and supplementing the regulations for assessing and classifying lower- and upper-secondary students issued with Circular No. 58/2011/TT-BGDĐT (laichau.gov.vn).

Diplomas, transcripts and certificates have a standard layout and are given by the Vietnamese Ministry of Education (Nuffic).

Teaching students from Vietnam

Students from Vietnam may bring a Bằng tốt nghiệp trung học phổ thông (secondary education diploma) or a Giấy chứng nhận tốt nghiệp (provisional diploma). Check which document the student has and record its name in your gradebook.

Set the scale up once in a gradebook so every report card and transcript you produce uses the same key.
