The Belarus grading system uses a 10-point numeric scale, where 10 is the highest grade and 2 the lowest. A grade of 3 is the minimum pass; there is no percentage key.

Rules are set nationally by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus, and the main school-leaving exam is the centralized exam.

This page explains what grades mean and how school grading works, then outlines how teachers can compare Belarusian marks with US, UK or ECTS grades.

It also covers teaching Belarusian students online or abroad, related systems and sources for verification.

What each Belarusian grade means

The main school scale is a 10-point numeric scale from 2 to 10, with 10 as the best grade and 2 as the worst; there is no percent key. Zdavaĺniajučy is the lowest passing grade, with numeric grades 3 to 5.

How Belarusian school grading is run

The Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus sets grading rules nationally and amended the rules on student assessment and the instructions for organizing and conducting the centralized exam by Resolution № 43 of 21 February 2025 (etalonline.by).

The rules define how students are transferred to the next class, and students who miss the centralized exam may take it at another time in accordance with established requirements (etalonline.by).

Belarusian candidates’ external exam results come from the centralized exam, formerly called centralized testing, and are entered into the admissions calculator as an advanced level exactly as shown on the certificate (Politechnika Poznańska).

Converting Belarusian grades to US, UK or ECTS grades

For admissions, the highest Belarusian school-leaving-certificate grade, 10, converts to 100 points, and other grades convert proportionally on a 0–100 scale, such as 9 to 90 points and 8 to 80 points.

To calculate cumulative high school GPA, convert final averages on the Attestat or Diplom, or yearly secondary-school report grades for students who have not graduated, to US equivalents and then quality points.

Weight each grade equally and divide the total quality points by the number of examination results included. (Politechnika Poznańska; naia.org)

If you teach Belarusian students online or abroad

Students from this system may bring an Аттестат об общем среднем образовании (school leaving certificate). Check the document title and record the grades using a consistent key in your gradebook.

Set the scale up once in a gradebook so every report card and transcript you produce uses the same key.
