Grade Categories

Set up weighted grade categories like homework, quizzes, and tests to calculate overall grades automatically.

Grade categories let you group assignments and assign weights so the gradebook calculates overall grades according to your grading policy.

Setting Up Categories

Go to the Grades tab for a class and click Manage Categories. Add categories with:

  • Name — e.g., "Homework", "Quizzes", "Tests", "Projects"
  • Weight — Percentage weight (all weights should sum to 100%)

How Weighting Works

The gradebook calculates a student's overall grade as the weighted average of their category averages:

  1. Within each category, calculate the average of all assignment scores
  2. Multiply each category average by its weight
  3. Sum the weighted averages for the overall grade

Important

If category weights don't sum to 100%, the gradebook will normalize them proportionally. For best results, ensure your weights add up to exactly 100%.

Per-Class Categories

Each class has its own set of categories and weights. This means your math class can weight tests heavily while your art class emphasizes projects — without any conflict.

Uncategorized Assignments

Assignments without a category are grouped into a default "Uncategorized" group. For accurate weighted calculations, assign every graded item to a category.
